Newham Generals - 5 Star

Tuesday 19th March 2013

As far as grime artists go, there aren’t many bigger or better out there than D Double E or Footsie. Combine the work of these two major grime artists and you’ve got Newham Generals.

With a number of releases under their belt, their latest EP ‘5 Star General’ which dropped in February, looks to be some of their best work yet.

Each of the six tracks featured on the EP contains the deep, heavy fusion of grime and dubstep that has become synonymous with the duo over the years.

The EP kicks off with ‘Darren and Dan’. Featuring a typically gnarly bass line and the pair’s fierce bars, it well and truly sets the tone for the rest of the EP.

There’s no sign of respite, as the massive ‘Boom Boom’ featuring P Money & Frisco carries on where the opening track left off. With a screechy bass line interspersing throughout the track and P Money’s typically on point bars...

The EP finishes up with ‘Spaz’, which sees the duo move from grime to heavy dubstep. This will no doubt annihilate raves everywhere thanks to a drop that builds and builds until unleashing a tidal wave of bass. Definitely a highlight on the EP for dubstep heads.

On the whole, this EP is more of the same from Newham Generals, which is definitely a good thing. With their unique blend of dubstep and grime featuring heavily throughout, it’s clear to see why Newham Generals are at the top of their game.

They are most notoriously known for their input on the massive ‘Hard’ collab with Breakage and Rodigan, which still smashes it every time it’s dropped.
